What is set mining?

I've heard of using the "set mining" strategy lately but I'm not even sure what it is. If anyone can clue me in I'd really appreciate it.

I'm pretty sure this is just a basic strategy and thats why I put it in the beginners section. If it's not in the right place feel free to move it mods.

Hey doodlemama, your right that set mining should be in the beginners section for sure lol!

Set mining is such a basic strategy. The basic concept of it is that a person holding any pocket pair will hit a set 12.5% of the time "or 1 in 8", so as long as your getting 8-1 implied odds you should call with any pocket pair. Set mining tends to work very well against players holding higher pocket pairs that are unlikely to fold and is really the whole idea behind the strategy.

Nice answer So Cal but this is the beginners section so we'll try and keep it as simple as possible, no offense doodlemama.

Set mining is the most basic strategy behind the implied odds concept and is simply taking advantage of them.

So your basically just playing your small pocket pair "while knowing that your behind" and hoping to flop a set as long as it isn't going to cost you to much pre-flop.

set mining....

you have a small pocket pair 22-66, you know you are behind or you know other players in the hand have 2 over cards, pre flop 3 people are in the hand and you flat call with pot odds.

You hit you are huge and will take down a big pot, you miss and there are 3 overs on the board to your pocket. fold and fight another day.

Dont fear set over set, but if you hit, bet around 60-75% of the pot and find out who thinks they can beat you when there are 4 or 5 people in pre flop.

A good player can always fold a big hand, because there will always be bigger hands out there that can beat you.
