PostSubject: Surviving an Economic Collapse   Sun May 16, 2010 6:54 pm

This weekend I've been reading a great book called "The Modern Survival Manual: Surviving the Economic Collapse Economic Collapse". It's written by a guy in Argentina who survived that country's financial meltdown after a devaluation resulting from too much government debt. It talks about how dramatically life changed. The middle class became poor overnight, and the poor became homeless and completely destitute. There was a complete breakdown in society and crime became more rampant and violent. Things got truly desperate for the overwhelming majority of the population.

This book talks about techniques the author used to survive the crisis. Some parts of this book are disturbing and made my stomach churn. I pray things will never get that bad here in the U.S., but I fear the worst given the path we're currently on. U.S. debt is estimated to be about $14 trillion, but when you add in unfunded liabilities that aren't counted (mainly Medicare and Social Security), you get a staggering $73 trillion. That amount will never be repaid, because our country can't afford it. I don't think the government will cut spending, I think the Fed will just print money to pay the obligations. If that happens, that will ultimately lead to the debasement of the U.S. dollar.

This book is worth checking out. Here's a link to it on Amazon.com.

Every boom has a bust and vice versa.
